Adventures
of a Private Party Magician: the Mayor & the Magician.
On this night, I perform in a home that reeks of elegance. Wealthy
potential donors wander through the floors between hors ‘deourves,
auction items, the Mayor of Mercer Island and the close-up magician.
The magic, attracting many important people, competes with the view
of Lake Washington.
I stroll through the crowds and several children follow. I do my
best to entertain them even though the client hired me for the adults.
The mayor talks seriously with various donors, and although I have
a history of arts awards in his city, I do not find a chance to
interrupt him with my special effects.
I encourage bidding by performing several amazing routines, and
then I announce that they all must bid higher. My ice breaking comedy
stirs up the crowd. A trip for two to Europe keeps the bidders until
the tables close. As the evening winds down, the hostess asks me
to assist with the grand prize drawing.
As I make my way through the crowd, I see the mayor stirring names
in a fish bowl. I begin to improvise. “Who do you trust more
to draw the one and only winner”, I ask the audience, “the
MAGICIAN or the POLITICIAN?”
Laughter roars through the crowd!
I look right at the Mayor hoping he likes this. Someone shouts,
“You mean there is a difference?” More roaring laughter!
The Mayor seems fine. He adds, “Yes, he does it all up front,
and I do it behind the scenes.” An additional roar!
The audience seems to trust us equally, so the Mayor mixes the
names, and I draw one from the bowl. The magician and the politician
draw the winner and the energy of the audience unites as we discover
who will fly for free to anywhere in Europe this summer.
The magic of the evening has succeeded. My risky, edgy, improvised
moment has humorously topped off the evening.
